New Media and Conceptualism in the 1970s
Between April 2 and June 1, 2019, the Galeria Superfície presents the exhibition “New Media and Conceptualism in the 70’s”. The collective exhibition includes works by Neide Sá, Faldas Silva, Edgar Antonio Vigo, Cildo Meireles, Waltercio Caldas, Vera Chaves Barcellos, Paulo Bruscky, Jota Medeiros, Regina Silveira, Lotus Lobo, Anna Bella Geiger, including the important work “Identidade do Artista” by Angelo de Aquino, among others.
Curated by Gustavo Nóbrega and with text by Glória Ferreira, the selected works present a small panorama of the conceptual art of the 1970s. Works on xerox art, postal art, video, photography, sound works, heliography, computer art, books of artist and etc, works that represent a fragment of the profusion of new languages used by the artists of the period, making evident how this experimentation of the artistic media coined a new range of languages that is present until today in the contemporary art.
The production of the artists exhibited in “New Media and Conceptualism in the 70s” was the target, in its emergence, of several exhibitions organized by the renowned art critic Walter Zanini. Zanini made bold and innovative exhibitions, such as the “I Biennial of Postal Art”, in 1981. 38 years later, one of the sectors of the exhibition in the Galeria Superfície will be dedicated to the same Postal Art, and will exhibit a rich collection which documents the intense exchange between artists of the time.
